Progress So Far

Work is coming along really well on the built-in cabinet for the storage room in our basement. The construction is complete. There is a bit more work to be done on painting all of the pieces and then it will be ready for assembly and installation. A few days ago, I did a test fit of the middle shelf portion and it looked great. When everything is finally installed, I know that there will be a gap of about 1/4″ at the top. I may or may not add some trim there depending on how it looks once installed.

Chamfer

One small additional item to note is the chamfer that I put on the inner edge of the cabinet door on the hinge side. You can see the chamfer in the image shown to the right. This was done because of a problem that I had when I installed the door on the lower cabinet. On that door, this edge would catch and bind slightly when operating the door even with the hinges adjusted to provide the maximum amount of clearance. I fixed the binding by removing the door and chamfering that edge with a block plane. I then repainted the exposed wood and reinstalled the door. To prevent possibly having to repeat that process, I went ahead and chamfered that edge during the construction of the door.
