What I Am Not Doing

Lately, when I have had time to be in the shop, I have been working on making a bunch of wooden crosses like the one I made for my son back in August. I made 33 blanks from which I intended to make 33 crosses, however, I have changed my mind.

I have decided to put the crosses aside for now. When I made the first one for my son, it was just a quick one-off project. It didn’t feel like it took much time to do it but then again I was only making one and I was figuring it out as I went along. Batching out the blanks wasn’t bad but when it came time to make the crosses themselves, I realized how time-consuming it was. I don’t feel like it is a good use of my time right now. If I come with a good idea for speeding up the process, I may go back to making a bunch of them. Otherwise, I will keep the blanks and make them occasionally for gifts or use them for other projects.

What I Am Doing

So what am I actually going to work on then? I am going to finish this built-in cabinet in the storage room in our basement. It was always my intention to fill the entire space but I took a break after finishing the base. To be honest with you I don’t remember why I took a break, I just know that I did, because the cabinet is not done.

I have gone back and forth on how I want to fill the remaining space above the base cabinet. My two thoughts were either just shelves or shelves with another smaller cabinet at the top. In the end, I have decided to go with shelves and a small cabinet. Not sure why other than that is what I think I will like best when it is done.

Slow Progress

As of yet, I have not gotten very far. I have my measurements and a basic plan. I am not doing a drawing or detailed plans. The shelves will be very simple and the upper cabinet will be nearly a clone of the lower cabinet, only smaller, so designing as I go feels fine.

I am the coach of the middle school girls soccer team where our kids go to school. Our regular season just ended and we are now in the tournament. That is taking up way more of my time than I had anticipated however it should all be over on Saturday. Once that is complete, I should be able to wrap this up fairly quickly.

I have started breaking down the plywood and have a few of the pieces cut out for the shelves. Once the shelving unit is assembled, I will make the upper cabinet to size. Some sanding, primer, and paint, and then I will install all the parts. A little trim at the top and some white painters caulk and it should all be finished.
