I just recently installed this corner hutch in a client’s home. It was built with solid red oak, oak plywood, and walnut.
This client was looking for a custom piece to go in a corner in the eat-in area of their kitchen. They wanted something functional while at the same time bold and striking. This is the resulting piece.
The upper and lower cabinets are made of oak. The back panels are 3/4″ oak plywood with solid oak strips glued to the lower edges. All other parts of the cabinets are made from solid red oak purchased at Home Depot. Home Depot has 3/4″ thick oak boards of various standard widths sold by the foot. See the following links for examples:
The top for the lower cabinet, the accent piece at the very top of the upper cabinet, and the connector piece on the back to join the upper and lower cabinets were all made from 8/4 walnut. This was purchased at my local hardwood dealer, Jeffries Wood Works.
The doors are set on 3/8″ inset hinges from Rockler. The knobs were purchased at Home Depot. The glass for the upper cabinet doors was purchased at Lowe’s. They will cut it to size for you in the store. The shelf pins for the adjustable shelves in the upper and lower cabinets were purchased from Amazon.
The walnut was all finished by first rubbing on a coat of shellac. I really like how blonde shellac brings out the grain and darkens the walnut. I then used Minwax Wipe-On Polyurethane. I started with a base of Clear Gloss and then built up several coats of Clear Satin, lightly sanding between each coat. For the top of the lower cabinet, I probably had a total of 9 or 10 coats. The accent piece at the top only had 4 or 5 total coats.
