This client project proved to be more challenging than it originally appeared. The client needed a central console built to add to their existing entertainment center. The overall design was straightforward. The complexity came from matching the design details, lines, and color with the existing piece.
The case is made from 3/4″ oak plywood that I found at Lowe’s with the exception of the back panel which is 1/4″ oak plywood, also from Lowe’s. The doors and bottom front trim were made from white oak that I got from Jeffries Wood Works in South Knoxville. The knobs were purchased from Amazon.
I stuck as close as possible to the design of the existing doors and bottom molding. This required purchasing a few new router bits. The bits I found that worked best for the shapes I needed were made by Amana Tool and I purchased them from ToolsToday.
Between the doors and the molding, the more difficult to make was the molding. I was unable to find a single router bit to cut the needed profile. Consequently, I had to buy two different bits and make the molding as two pieces.
I tried a total of 7 different stain colors. The stain that was closest was Minwax Puritan Pine, however, it wasn’t quite right. When I added super blonde shellac on top of the Puritan Pine it made the color match essentially exactly.
