Description

I built this project for my son as a Christmas present. He was already going to be getting the wireless charger as a gift and I decided to make a little dock for the charger. The idea is that the dock, in addition to holding the charger, would provide a place to put a wallet, keys, loose change, etc.

The charger was purchased from Amazon. It is a Nanami Fast Wireless Charging Stand and as of the time of writing this, there is a 5% off coupon available on Amazon.

The dock is made from two pieces of baltic birch plywood that I had leftover from a previous project. I first cut a 3/4″ piece of plywood to the overall size that I wanted for the dock. Then I traced out the place where the charger would go including the cut-out for the USB-C cable. Next, I traced out the other two compartments. I cut out the three areas using a scroll saw leaving only the frame around the compartments.

I then cut a piece of 1/2″ baltic birch to be the base. I cut it to be slightly larger than the outer dimensions of the frame. The frame was then glued down to the base. Once that was dry, I used a flush trim router bit to trim the base to match the frame. Finally, I rounded over the edges with a router and sanded everything.

Unfortunately, I was in a bit of a hurry and did not sand as thoroughly as I would have liked and this resulted in a poor finish.

I finished the dock with Minwax Espresso Wood Stain and several coats of Minwax Clear Gloss Wipe-On Poly.

Despite the problems with the finish resulting from my haste in getting the project finished in time for Christmas, my son loved it. He took the pictures for me from his dorm room where he is using this as I write this.
